Authors Tiffany Jackson and Jeff Zentner both create stories with diverse and dynamic characters who deal with everyday drama and tough choices. Their characters are trying to figure out who they are, how to navigate life's challenges, and how to honor their own voices in worlds that often try to drown them out.
The Bozeman Teen Book Fest's Creativity Challenge wants to know how you "honor your voice" through writing, art, song, or other mediums.
THEME: Honor Your Voice!
Share a time when you honored your voice, when someone you admire did or how you imagine a fictional character doing this. These creations can address big, bold examples of ways you honor your voice. Alternately, your story can encompass quiet, subtle (yet important) ways you do this. You do not have to approach this theme literally: sometimes honoring your voice does not involve speaking. It can simply mean making the truest choice for
yourself. It can mean NOT doing something.
WHAT TO CREATE:
Write an original short story, personal essay, graphic novel or comic excerpt, poem, song lyrics, podcast episode, interview OR create an illustration, painting, piece of pottery, quilt,
textile, embroidery, multi-media video, book talk, book trailer, play scene.
If you have another idea that isn’t specifically named, send an e-mail to Kate Holloway, Teen Services Librarian at kholloway@bozeman.net to get the OK.
Whichever form you choose, you MUST make the theme,
"Honor Your Voice", integral to your creation.
WRITING ENTRIES FORMAT:
(short story, personal essay, graphic novel/comic excerpt, poem, song lyrics, interview) must be typed, double-spaced, single-sided, 12-point Times or Courier, 1-inch margins, limit 6 pages.
VISUAL ART FORMAT:
(illustration, painting, pottery, quilt, textile, embroidery, photograph) 1 piece per student, 1-page written explanation of its connection to the theme
MULTI-MEDIA FORMAT:
(podcast episode, interview, song lyrics, video, book talk/trailer) limit 10 minutes, mp3 or mp4 file formats.
HOW TO ENTER:
Submit printable/physical entries to The Country Bookshelf (28 W. Main St.), the Children's Desk at the Bozeman Public Library or your school library.
