A Letter on the Freedom to Read From the Board of Trustees

There has been a significant amount of discussion recently about what materials public libraries should, or should not, have in their collections; and these debates have taken place at the national, state, and local levels. We, the Trustees of the Bozeman Public Library, feel it is important at this time to re-express our firm commitment to our community’s freedom to read.

The intellectual freedom of our community is based on individuals’ rights to access a wide diversity of information, and this to include positions that may be unpopular or outside of the mainstream; and to not have that access filtered by others’ perspectives and opinions. It is librarians’ responsibility to make such materials available, within the constraints of the institution’s resources, while not necessarily endorsing or supporting them. This reaffirmation of the Trustees’ position is in alignment with, and supported by, the Montana State Library Commission Statement on the Freedom to Read which was issued in August, 2022, and which says, in part, “… The opportunity to read and inform one’s opinions, to engage in open discourse, and to express differing ideas are fundamental rights of Americans and are core aspects of our national character. Public libraries stand as institutions that foster information sharing, discourse, and the free expression of ideas. Banning, removing, or censoring materials, speakers, or displays without due process violates Americans’ Constitutional rights.”

We cannot know the many different viewpoints and opinions of those who walk through the doors of the Bozeman Public Library, but we can work to ensure that they have access to a wide range of reading materials, ones that may challenge their perspectives or levels of comfort, and ones that are representative of the diversity and growth of our dynamic community.
